The Masai Mara National Reserve covers 1510 km sq in South Western Kenya. It is bounded by Serengeti Park to the South. The Siria Escarpment to the West, and Maasai Group Ranches to the North, East and West. The Sand, Talek, and Mara are the major rivers draining the reserve.

Shrubs and trees fringe most drainage lines and cover hill slopes and hilltops. The terrain of the reserve is primarily open grassland with seasonal riverlets. In the south-east region are clumps of the distinctive acacia tree.

The Mara is famous for its exceptional population of big cats, game, and the annual migration of Zebra, Thompson’s Gazelle and Wildebeast from Serengeti every year from July to October. The migration is so immense and is called the Great Migration. The big five ie Lion, Leopard, African Elephant, African Buffalo, and Black Rhinoceros are found here.

Hippopotami and Nile Crocodiles are found in large groups in the Mara and Talek rivers. Hyenas, cheetahs, jackals, and bat-eared foxes can also be found in the reserve. The plains between Mara river and the Siria Escarpment are the best for game viewing.
